Why Tendons Are Slow to Settle
Tendons are the tough, fibrous cords that connect your muscles to your bones, and they are built to handle serious load. The trade-off is that they have a fairly modest blood supply, so they adapt and recover more slowly than muscle.
When a tendon becomes painful, often through a spike in activity or a change in routine, it can take time to calm down. That slower pace is exactly why recurring tendon pain can feel so persistent.
Why Rest Alone Often Isn’t the Answer
When something hurts, resting it feels like the obvious answer. With tendons, complete rest can ease pain in the short term, but it often does not build the capacity the tendon needs to cope with your normal activities.
So you rest, feel better, return to your usual load, and the pain flares again. It is a frustrating loop, and it is one of the most common patterns we see. The missing ingredient is usually the right kind of loading.
Loading: The Language Tendons Understand
Tendons respond to load. Given the right amount of gradual, progressive exercise, they adapt by becoming stronger and more tolerant over time. This is the foundation of modern tendon rehab, and the evidence strongly supports it.
The key is the dose. Too little and the tendon does not adapt, too much too soon and it flares. A physio can help you find that sweet spot and build from there, adjusting as your tendon responds.
Patience and a Plan
Tendon rehab rewards consistency more than intensity. Progress can take weeks to months rather than days, which is completely normal and not a sign that anything is wrong.
With a clear, progressive program and a bit of patience, many people get back to the activities they love with far fewer flare-ups. You do not have to guess your way through it or simply hope the pain stays away.
If you are tired of your tendon pain circling back, our team can assess what is driving it and design a loading program that fits your goals and your lifestyle.
